What is a Lawn Tractor?

Lawn tractors, otherwise known as garden tractors or ride-on lawn mowers, are larger lawn mower machines designed for efficient and easy mowing of areas that would be difficult to mow with a walk behind mower.

These large lawn mowers come with a cutting disc mounted beneath the seat. This gives you a high level of power and comfort as you ride. You can just sit comfortably in place while you mow your lawn, rather than having to push a heavy mower.

"Lawn tractor" is a term generally used to refer to larger and more expensive models of ride-on lawn mowers. A lawn tractor offers the highest level of cutting power and the greatest efficiency, allowing you to trim large lawn areas at high speeds and still receive a smooth, even trim. These are the best options for larger yards or professional lawn trimming and grass maintenance.

They can also be equipped with optional accessories, ranging from carts and vacuum attachments to more seasonally specific things, such as snow throwers.

The large size of lawn and garden tractors means they are less maneuverable than smaller mowers. Their large turning circles make them less well suited to smaller gardens filled with tight spaces and sharp corners than their smaller counterparts.

How To Charge a Lawn Tractor Battery

As with any battery-powered appliance, even the best lawn tractor needs its lawn mower batteries charging. It's particularly important to charge your battery at the start of the summer, as a riding mower battery can easily deplete over the winter if you forget to disconnect the battery cables before putting it away in storage.

Fortunately, recharging your lawn tractor battery can be relatively easy, as long as you know what you're doing. Avoid touching the terminals with your bare hands or bridging between the terminals with a tool or any other conductive object, as this can lead to personal injury or damage to your tractor in the process.

Before you charge your lawn tractor battery, check the voltage. The vast majority of lawn tractors use 12-volt batteries, but some older models will use different voltages. This will affect the charger you need, as 12-volt batteries are not compatible with chargers of different voltages. Using the wrong charger can cause damage.

Link your charger cables to the battery. Begin with the positive cable, which is red and marked with a + symbol. The negative cable is black and marked with a – symbol – this should be attached secondly. After you've hooked up both cables, plug the charger into an electrical outlet, and charging will begin.

Most chargers need to be monitored and timed manually, but some higher-end models may feature indicator lights or beep when the battery is fully charged. In general, though, chargers will fully charge a lawn tractor battery in 4 to 6 hours. Once charging is complete, switch the charger off and unplug it from the outlet.

Wait a few minutes for everything to cool down, and then remove the cables in reverse order from how you attached them – first remove the black negative cable, then the red positive one afterward. Once you've done this, you're ready to hook the battery back up to your garden tractor, and you're good to go again!

How To Change a Lawn Tractor Battery

Even if well maintained and carefully charged, lawn tractor batteries will eventually fail to hold further charges. At this point, the only option is to replace the battery to keep your ride-on mower running. Lawn mower batteries are usually located under the hood or seat of the mower and can be found and removed easily. Switch off the mower, remove the keys, and remove any bar or strap holding the battery in place.

Then remove the black (negative) cable before moving on to the red (positive) cable. Take the battery out and carefully wash out any corrosion and debris from the housing. Dry the housing carefully, and paint over any spots of rust as battery fumes can exacerbate these problems.

Place the new battery into the housing and attach any fastening straps or bars before reattaching the power cables. This time, attach the red (positive) cable first, followed by the black (negative) cable. Replace the battery cover, and test it briefly to ensure everything is working before using the mower properly again.
